The future of MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League is still foggy with speculations! At present, the 44-year-old cricketer drew a stir by putting on a Mumbai Indians tank top while playing a little football with some friends, and that goes utterly against his CSK legacy. Dhoni had captained CSK in the IPL 2025 when Ruturaj Gaikwad was unavailable but was unable to lead the team into the playoffs.

According to sources close to CSK, Dhoni’s future plans might depend on how his knees hold up and ongoing discussions with the management. If Dhoni stays around for IPL 2026, it will be a big thing for CSK and Indian cricket at large. Dhoni’s decision would be looked forward to by the fans because of the strong impact he has had on the sport.

MS Dhoni spotted in MI tank-top

One would probably have to consider Dhoni a free agent in the IPL if he were to ever catch an MI tank-topping in that totally friendly football match with his buddies. Dhoni is still forging that barefoot shot from miles away, with the MI logo well clear. What a surprising sight that would have been to set the mind thinking about his possible move if he played at all this season.

In 2025, he had stepped in for Ruturaj Gaikwad as CSK captain but could not deliver his team into the playoffs. There are indications of Dhoni willing to continue playing for CSK, at an advanced age. He is said to be going for at least one more season, in part willingly, because with N. Srinivasan being made chairman of CSK, it might just influence his decision.

It is a well-kind-of-known fact that Dhoni has an inclination toward football, and he has been seen many times in warm-ups and exhibition trials with football skills. The viral picture has been a source of two contradicting views, with one set considering the possibility of his move to MI, while the other disregards it as a casual wave.

With the tags of an icon in Chennai through his association with CSK, moving to MI looks far less probable. In IPL standard of his time, of course, he has those five titles to his name.
