Mumbai Indians may have begun their IPL 2026 campaign with a victory against Kolkata Knight Riders, but everything has gone pear shaped after that single win for the IPL giants. After beating KKR in the inaugural game they have lost 5 of their subsequent 6 encounters, with a significant loss to Chennai Super Kings in Match 33 of the competition coming at the Wankhede Stadium.
Hardik Pandya's men are currently struggling in 8th place in the table, with just two wins in seven games to their name and a mere 4 points in total. Their net run rate reads -0.736 and as the league stage races towards its conclusion, each fixture from here on will be crucial.
In a 10-team league like the IPL, teams generally require around 16 points to qualify comfortably for the knockout stage, while occasionally 14 has proved sufficient though it has to be considered with regards to the net run rate and results of other sides.
Mumbai Indians have 7 fixtures left in the competition, meaning they would need to win 6 of their remaining 7 games in order to achieve 16 points, a huge ask and an achievement they would only have managed to achieve 4 times in the history of the competition. Even if they manage 5 wins, which would result in 14 points, they still have a slim chance, dependent on other sides and their net run rate.
The pressure is immense, and any result less than victory in their remaining fixtures could well spell an early exit for the Indians.
The million dollar question, can Mumbai turn the table again? Well, MI have been known for a fightback historically and that has always given their fans a lot to cheer for. They reached the playoffs last year after a terrific comeback, registering wins in 5 out of their final 7 matches and securing 16 points in total.
Back in 2015 when Rohit Sharma-led Indians had just two wins in their first 7 matches, they followed it up with 6 wins in their next 7 and topped the league stages before winning the final and lifting the trophy.
History is there to motivate them, though 5 wins alone may not be enough this time and MI would require a monumental turnaround along with a decent net run rate too. At the moment, all MI can do is play each game at a time and hope they can bounce back against each challenge thrown at them.
