Usman Khawaja was asked what a dream farewell would be like before his 88th and last Test match. His response was very suggestive. The atmosphere made it again for his last moment of Test cricket to end unbeaten in a successful chase, but it did not happen that way. He lost his wicket by an inside edge on the bowling of Josh Tongue and Australia later went on to win the match by five wickets thus clinching the series 4-1.
However, Usman Khawaja still had the chance to get the last applause. The England players made a corridor of honor as he passed in front of them, recognizing his 88 Tests and his role in the development of both country and sport. Khawaja first shook hands with England captain Stokes as a sign of goodwill before he took his position at the crease.
After the game, he took off his helmet and gloves, raised his bat, and enjoyed a standing ovation from the crowd at SCG on day five which was 25,847 people. Being the first Muslim Test cricketer from Australia, he knelt for a Sajdah—a part of Muslim prayer—right beside a message that was painted on the field that read “Thanks Uzzy #419”.
Khawaja gave interview to Fox Cricket after the game:
"As much as I wanted to go out there and score runs and hit the winning runs, I'm just grateful for one last final win and celebrate with my team-mates."
Usman Khawaja a couple of days after confessed that the load of emotions had an impact on his performance. He had always held on to his process and remained cool, particularly during the last four years when he had been a dependable figure at the top of Australia’s batting order. But he was dealing with his emotions the whole week, and it was reflected in two nervous innings of 17 and 6.
He can take his time now, being aware of the fact that he had finished a great career for the country that might become even more valued in retirement than it already was. He retires with the honor of being one of the 16 Australians who scored 6000 Test runs and made 16 Test centuries. Among the ten Australians who scored more than 3000 runs while opening, only Bob Simpson, Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer averaged more than his 48.05.
His substitute captain and collaborator for a long time, Steven Smith, showered him with praises during the post-match ceremony.
