Karnataka ended Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B clash against Saurashtra in Rajkot at 295 for five, thanks to composed batting efforts from Devdutt Padikkal, Karun Nair, and R Smaran. After winning the toss and opting to bat, the visitors had a shaky start as openers Nikin Jose and skipper Mayank Agarwal fell cheaply to left-arm spinner Dharmendra Jadeja, leaving the side reeling at 26 for two. However, Padikkal and Nair stepped up under pressure, stitching together a valuable 146-run stand for the third wicket that revived Karnataka’s innings.
Devdutt Padikkal showcased his trademark elegance with a fluent 96 off 141 balls, striking 11 boundaries, ten of which came through the off-side with crisp drives and cuts. Karun Nair, returning to play for his home state after a stint with Vidarbha, supported him with a well-composed 73 from 126 deliveries. Nair preferred the leg-side, collecting five of his nine boundaries between fine leg and square leg while also using deft touches to third man.
The pair’s partnership steadied Karnataka after a wobbly start and put them in a strong position at tea. However, Jadeja once again came to Saurashtra’s rescue, trapping Karun Nair leg-before and later bowling Padikkal with a well-flighted delivery. Padikkal’s dismissal, attempting an unnecessary pull shot after doing the hard work, left Karnataka at 195 for four.
Despite losing their set batters, Karnataka maintained momentum through R Smaran and Shreyas Gopal, who added an unbroken 81-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Smaran, unbeaten on 66 from 120 balls, played with great poise and timing, producing classy shots through the off-side, including a stunning drive against Chetan Sakariya. At the other end, the experienced Gopal remained steady on 38 not out, using his domestic experience to guide the innings through the closing stages.
Their partnership not only blunted Saurashtra’s late charge but also lifted Karnataka to a competitive total by stumps. Ravindra Jadeja was the standout bowler for Saurashtra with figures of 4 for 100, consistently troubling the batters and picking crucial wickets at key moments. Karnataka’s middle order ensured that early setbacks did not derail their innings, setting up an evenly poised contest for Day 2.
