Pakistan have yet another crushing disappointment on their hands this time in women’s international cricket as they failed to qualify for the maiden edition of the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 to be held in Sri Lanka.
The team captained by Fatima Sana will not be able to participate in the six-team event, marking another failure for Pakistan’s women’s cricketing side. The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 is scheduled to be held from February 14th to February 28th.
The tournament was initially slated to be held in the June July window but has been brought forward to February.
Sri Lanka automatically qualify as the host nation while the remaining five places will be determined by the ICC Women’s T20I rankings. Pakistan stand at the eighth position in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings as of June and with the cut-off date set for July 6th, there is no mathematical possibility of breaking into the top-six.
Thus Sri Lanka, Australia England, India, New Zealand, and South Africa have already qualified. Pakistan Ruled Out Of Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 Pakistan's disappointment comes following a dreadful run in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 where they could only manage one victory from their five matches.
Fatima Sana led Pakistan commenced their campaign with a 64 run defeat against India followed by a two-wicket loss to South Africa.
Bangladesh registered a 23-run win while the Australian team decimated them by a colossal 113 runs. Even in their match against tournament debutants Netherlands Pakistan were put under pressure but managed to narrowly escape a second defeat thanks to three wickets each from their captain Fatima Sana and opener Ayesha Zafar. They ended up in fifth place in Group A one above only Netherlands with just two points and a woeful net run rate of -1.872.
Bangladesh finished level on points with four but their net run rate of -0.849 was significantly better.
Pakistan may be one of the most celebrated nations in cricket but they have won just three ICC senior men's titles in their history.
The first ICC trophy that came their way was the ODI World Cup title in 1992 when Imran Khan’s team edged England to lift the coveted trophy in Australia.
Next they won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2009 by defeating Sri Lanka in the finals of the tournament. Finally the Men in Green secured their latest ICC title by defeating India in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final in England. Worth noting is that all the ICC trophies for Pakistan are in their men’s cabinet. The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 will therefore feature hosts Sri Lanka, along with Australia, England, India, New Zealand, and South Africa.
Cricket Australia have been notified of the tournament shift, as the former were due to host New Zealand in a limited-overs series at that time.
