Pakistan kicked off the three-match T20I series with a solid 1-0 lead, thanks to a convincing six-wicket win over Sri Lanka at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, the visitors showcased a disciplined bowling effort that saw the Sri Lankan team bowled out for a modest 128. Although there were a few wobbly moments in the middle overs, Pakistan's chase was steadied by a composed half-century from opener Sahibzada Farhan, allowing them to comfortably reach the target with 20 balls to spare.
Sri Lanka struggled to find their rhythm throughout their innings, losing wickets at regular intervals. The collapse started early when Kamil Mishara was dismissed for a duck by Salman Mirza in the third over.
Pathum Nissanka followed soon after, making just 12 runs off 12 balls. The introduction of spin further stifled their scoring, with Shadab Khan making a notable return by taking out Kusal Mendis (14) and Dhananjaya de Silva (10) in the same over. Charith Asalanka briefly ignited hope with a six but ultimately fell for 18 to Abrar Ahmed.
The only real resistance from the hosts came from Janith Liyanage, who top-scored with a determined 40 off 31 balls. He formed small partnerships with Wanindu Hasaranga (18) and skipper Dasun Shanaka (12), but neither could turn their starts into a significant score.
Abrar was the standout bowler, using his variations to take 3 for 25, while Salman Mirza also picked up three wickets to clean up the tail. Sri Lanka was eventually all out for 128 in 19.2 overs, a total that seemed well below par on a pitch that offered some assistance to the slower bowlers.
In response, Pakistan's openers got off to a blazing start, easing any pressure on the scoreboard. Sahibzada and Saim Ayub put together a rapid 55-run partnership in just the first six overs. Farhan was particularly aggressive, smashing Nuwan Thushara for two massive sixes in one over to set the tone for the innings. Although Maheesh Theekshana broke the partnership by bowling out Ayub for 24, the damage had already been done.
The visitors kicked off strong, scoring 59 runs for 1 wicket at nearly 10 runs per over during the PowerPlay. Sri Lanka tried to fight back as Hasaranga took out Salman Agha for 16 runs, and Dushmantha Chameera got rid of the threatening Farhan just after he hit his fifty. Dhananjaya de Silva added to the pressure by stumping Fakhar Zaman for just 10, leaving Pakistan at 106 for 4.
But with the required run rate comfortably in check, Shadab and Usman Khan kept their cool and guided the team to the finish line. Farhan's impressive 51 off 33 balls was the standout performance of the match, earning him the Player of the Match award as Pakistan wrapped up the game at 129 for 4 with two balls to spare in the 17th over.
