Debutant Shamar Joseph first put on a gusty 55-run final-wicket stand to annoy Australia after West Indies suffered an astonishing collapse of 6 for 35. He then struck with his first ball in Test cricket to dismiss ‘new opener’ Steve Smith cheaply.
Hitting a good length outside off with his first delivery, he drew Smith – opening for the first time in Tests – into playing, and the thick edge was well caught at third slip. It made him the 23rd bowler to ensnare a wicket with his first delivery in men’s Tests, and just the second West Indian after Tyrell Johnson against England at The Oval in 1939.
Earlier, Pat Cummins (4-41) and Josh Hazlewood (4-44) returned four-fers to give Australia opening day honours. Poor judgement and woeful shot selection from the inexperienced Windies line-up, and a total lack of application meant Australia took control of proceedings.
Brief scores: Australia 59/2 (Usman Khawaja 30*; Shamar 2-18) trail West Indies 188 (Kirk McKenzie 50, Shamar Joseph 36; Pat Cummins 4-41, Josh Hazlewood 4-44) by 129 runs
