Australia has set a new record in Women’s World Cup history with the highest team total of 338 runs scored in 49.5 overs. The record-breaking effort consisted of a beautiful hundred from Phoebe Litchfield, whose smooth stroke play was the backbone of the innings from beginning to end. Litchfield’s composed and precise stroke technique gave a hint of what turned out to be a very powerful performance from the Australians.

Alongside Litchfield’s outstanding performance, half-centuries from Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner were also crucial, as they both played a big role in increasing the total. Their partnerships maintained the constantly increasing momentum as the Australians batted and the bowlers kept losing the battle. The pressure on the scoreboard finally surpassed South Africa’s 319 for seven, which was the highest total in this edition of the tournament so far.

Litchfield’s century also put her together with an exclusive group of batters that have scored in women’s world cup knockout matches, joining such famous names as Healy, Kaur, Sciver-Brunt, Wolvaardt, Wyatt-Hodge, and Rolton.

Phoebe Litchfield upsets India with a century in the semi-finals:

In the semi-final of the Women’s World Cup, Phoebe Litchfield presented us a batting masterclass by striking an unbelievable century of 77 balls against India at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. She was in the middle of the innings when Australia decided to bat and she lost her captain Alyssa Healy, early to Kranti Gaud but remained cool, rebuilding the innings with confidence and finesse. Her class strokeplay, coupled with intelligent shot selection, kept Australia in charge even though India had a breakthrough in the beginning.

Litchfield reached her fifty off 45 balls and then changed the pace of her innings to move rapidly to her hundred. A dropped catch by Richa Ghosh off Amanjot Kaur was another blow to India as the young left-handed batswoman kept on taking the bowlers to task. At one point, she had a close call when the replays of the caught-out decision showed clearly that it was a bump ball and hence she was not out.

But then again, Litchfield kept on attacking without any hesitation and even hit Deepti Sharma for two sixes in a row before Amanjot Kaur finally got her out for 119 off 93 balls. Her partnership of 155 runs with Ellyse Perry was the base for Australia’s huge score.
