The Rajasthan Royals (RR) have appointed spin-bowling all-rounder Riyan Parag as their captain for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 24-year-old brings prior leadership experience, having led RR in eight matches during the 2025 season when former captain Sanju Samson was sidelined due to injury.
The franchise officially announced the appointment at 4 PM IST on Friday, February 13. In a pre-recorded message, Riyan Parag revealed that he had been informed of his new role by head coach Kumar Sangakkara and team owner Manoj Badale ahead of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up clash against the USA.
“A lot of emotions, but then straight to the matter, like what do I need to do next? Like what do we need to change, or do better to finish in a better place?” Riyan Parag’s first words upon being appointed as RR captain.

Riyan Parag edged out contenders like Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal to secure the permanent captaincy. Rajasthan Royals required a new leader following Sanju Samson’s off-season move to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2026 IPL Auction.
Under Parag’s leadership in the eight matches he has captained so far, RR have recorded two wins and suffered six defeats.
The Assam all-rounder suffered a shoulder injury midway through the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) domestic season. He reported to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where he completed his rehabilitation alongside teammates Tilak Varma and Mayank Yadav.
Following his recovery, Riyan Parag was included in the India ‘A’ squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up matches against the USA and Namibia. He impressed with a 39-ball 69 in India’s 130-run victory over Namibia and also bowled a couple of overs.
Having been with Rajasthan Royals since the early stages of his career, Parag now carries significant responsibility as the franchise aims for a breakthrough season after finishing ninth in IPL 2025.
