Treat yourself to an exhibition of seam bowling as England Cricket brings to you a compilation of Ollie Robinson’s wickets in Ashes 2023. Let’s turn back the clock to set the scene.
England swatted aside the Australian tail quickly after dislodging the brilliant Usman Khawaja in first innings of the opening Ashes Test on 18 June. The lower-order couldn’t quite tackle the short ball ploy, and the lead that seemed likely for the visitors at one stage didn’t quite materialise.
James Anderson gave England an early breakthrough in the form of half-centurion Alex Carey early on the third morning, going right through his defence after Jonny Bairstow shelled another chance. Ollie Robinson brought an end to Khawaja’s hard-working knock, dismantling the off-stump with a pinpoint yorker. He danced down premeditatedly, then tried to squeeze it out but missed. The southpaw walked back to a standing ovation from the Edgbaston crowd after scoring 141 off 321 balls, his maiden century in England. That opened the floodgates as Stuart Broad and Robinson blew the lower order away.
Later in the series, Robinson explained that the tight turnaround between the second and third Tests, and his heavy workload at Lord’s – where he sent down 50.4 overs across two innings – contributed to his back spasm, a problem that has arisen previously in his career.
Happy birthday, Robbo!
