After India’s nine-wicket win over Australia in the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, former India coach Ravi Shastri heaped praise on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for their outstanding performances.
Australia were dismissed for 236 runs in 46.4 overs, and India comfortably chased down the target in just 38.3 overs. Rohit Sharma led the way with an impressive 121* from 125 balls, while Kohli contributed a calm 74* off 81 balls. Despite the win, India still ended up losing the series 1-2.
Harshit Rana was the standout bowler for India, taking 4 wickets for 39 runs, while Washington Sundar and Axar Patel also played key roles with the ball. Australia’s top scorers were Matt Renshaw (56) and Mitchell Marsh (41).
Rohit played a measured knock, first putting on a 69-run partnership with Shubman Gill (24), before partnering with Kohli in a dominant unbroken stand of 168 runs. Kohli remained at the crease, guiding India over the line to victory. “You two old dogs still have a sting in the tail,” Shastri said.
Rohit smiled at the remark and responded, “It certainly feels that way. We both love playing cricket, and that’s the most important thing, regardless of the accolades we’ve earned over the years. But whenever we get the chance to play, it’s crucial to approach it with a fresh mindset. That’s exactly what we did when we arrived in Perth. We left behind everything from the past 15–17 years and focused on starting fresh. That’s how I approach every game, and I’m sure Virat does the same. I really enjoyed playing these three matches.”
Their cheerful bond and match-defining partnership sealed a strong finish for India, further cementing the remarkable journey of their long-standing partnership.
As they wrapped up their time at the historic ground, the duo thanked the Australian crowd for their incredible support.
