After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) explored the possibility of shifting their home venue to Pune, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) have now expressed interest in relocating their home matches to the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Gahunje. Senior officials from the franchise, accompanied by representatives of the BCCI, recently visited the venue to assess its suitability.

Confirming the development, MCA secretary Kamlesh Pisal told News Arena India on Sunday, “Yes, Rajasthan Royals, along with some BCCI officials, visited the MCA Stadium in Gahunje and expressed interest in hosting their home matches here.”

Pisal further clarified that while RCB had earlier approached MCA, public sentiment in Bengaluru is likely to keep the franchise in its original home city. “RCB did approach us, but due to significant fan pressure, their matches are likely to remain in Bengaluru,” he said.

The Royals’ pursuit of Pune is closely linked to their ongoing strained relationship with the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). With uncertainty surrounding the availability of the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, the franchise is exploring alternative venues. Pune has emerged as the frontrunner after the MCA indicated a willingness to host the team.

“We are happy with RR’s interest and would like to have them play here. MCA assures them the best possible facilities,” Pisal said, signalling a positive outlook for the potential shift.

The Rajasthan Royals are not the first IPL franchise to consider changing their home venue. Punjab Kings previously moved a majority of their home games from Mohali to Mullanpur due to concerns over spectator turnout, while continuing to play select matches in Dharamshala.

Pune’s interest from IPL teams underscores its growing reputation as the sports city of the West. The city’s world-class infrastructure, including the MCA Stadium, along with its strong sporting culture and consistent fan support, has made it a preferred venue for major sporting events. The city has hosted international cricket, ATP tennis tournaments, national football events and multiple marquee competitions across disciplines, reinforcing its stature as one of India’s most dynamic sports hubs.

If the relocation materialises, Rajasthan Royals could become the next major franchise to call Pune its home, further consolidating the city's position on the national sporting map.
