Sri Lankan cricket great Kumar Sangakkara is reportedly poised to take over as Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) head coach for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The franchise began searching for a new coach after former India captain Rahul Dravid stepped down from the role last month.
As per ESPNcricinfo, Sangakkara has informally begun preparations for IPL 2026 as RR’s head coach. The 47-year-old has been linked with the franchise since 2021, initially serving as Director of Cricket. He previously held the head coach position from 2021 to 2024, before Dravid was appointed following India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph under Sangakkara’s coaching stint.
Although Dravid had signed a multi-year contract, he stepped down after only one season. Rajasthan Royals revealed that they had proposed a larger role within the franchise to him, which he chose to decline. In an official statement, the inaugural champions said:
“Rajasthan Royals today announced that head coach Rahul Dravid will conclude his tenure with the franchise ahead of IPL 2026. Rahul has been central to the Royals’ journey for many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, instilled strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise.”
“As part of the franchise structural review, Rahul had been offered a broader position at the franchise, but has chosen not to take this. The Rajasthan Royals, its players, and millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service to the franchise.”
The Rajasthan Royals had a lackluster IPL 2025 season, falling short of a playoff spot. With regular captain Sanju Samson sidelined due to injury, all-rounder Riyan Parag stepped in as stand-in captain for several matches. The team managed only four victories out of 14 games, finishing ninth on the points table.
Since their maiden title win in 2008, the franchise has yet to clinch another championship. Whether Kumar Sangakkara’s return as head coach will turn their fortunes around in IPL 2026 remains to be seen.
