Shahid Afridi has called for Mohsin Naqvi to step down from either his role as Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) or as the country’s Interior Minister following Pakistan’s setbacks in the Asia Cup. Naqvi, at the centre of controversy after taking the Asia Cup trophy and refusing to hand it to the winners, India, is now facing intense scrutiny over his dual responsibilities.

He remarked :

My request or advice to Naqvi Saheb is that you have two very important posts, and they are big jobs and need time. PCB is totally different from the interior ministry, so it must be kept separate.”

Naqvi also holds the position of President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), having taken over after India’s Jay Shah moved to the ICC. Critics argue that handling multiple high-profile roles has impacted his effectiveness, with Pakistan being embarrassed by India three times in the regional tournament.

The team’s poor batting and perceived lack of direction from the PCB have amplified calls for action. Afridi emphasised the urgency of a decision. “It would be a big decision and should be taken as soon as possible. Pakistan cricket needs special attention and time,” he stated.

Criticism Over Leadership

Following Pakistan’s runner-up finish in the Asia Cup, Mohsin Naqvi’s leadership has come under fire. Analysts and former players have criticised both the team’s on-field performance and the board’s administrative decisions.

Shaheen Afridi highlighted that Naqvi’s reliance on his advisers has been problematic :

Naqvi cannot rely totally on advisers. These advisers are taking him nowhere, and he himself says that he doesn’t know much about cricket.” The lack of effective guidance has left the PCB’s decision-making and strategic planning in question, increasing pressure on Naqvi to focus on one role.

Afridi further stressed the need for competent support. “He (Naqvi) needs to appoint good and competent advisers who know about the game,” he said. Without knowledgeable advisers, the board’s future could remain uncertain, especially with Pakistan striving to rebuild its cricketing reputation.

Calls for a Clear Focus

Afridi’s advocacy for Naqvi to relinquish one of his positions has reportedly reached the highest levels, including the country’s Army Chief. Sources suggest that Afridi urged senior leadership to advise Naqvi to concentrate on either the PCB chairmanship or the Interior Ministry to ensure both roles receive the attention they demand.

“It would be a big decision and should be taken as soon as possible,” Afridi reiterated. With tensions rising over the Asia Cup controversy, the expectation is that Naqvi will make a prompt choice to restore stability and credibility to Pakistan cricket and its administration.
