A training session at the Hanif Mohammad High Performance Centre nearly ended in disaster as Pakistan pacer Mir Hamza Sajjad was hit on the back of his head by a shot during practice. The incident happened on Tuesday and PSL batter Mark Chapman struck Sajjad with the shot.
The Pakistani news source Geo Super claimed that Sajjad collapsed after being hit and had briefly lost consciousness before being rushed to the hospital where doctors examined him.
Sources confirm that Mir Hamza Sajjad is conscious and stable. "He is out of immediate danger," however a CT scan has been scheduled to ascertain the extent of the injury. The training session was cut short with the players looking concerned.
Mir Hamza Sajjad is a domestic bowler who has represented Pakistan at various age-group levels, but has been part of few T20 matches (eight in which he has eight wickets) and eight first-class games (with 25 wickets). The Islamabad United pick from the PSL 2026 auction for PKR 70 lakh is yet to make his debut in the tournament. This injury could keep him away for longer.
The incident comes days after a net bowler for Lahore Qalandars was struck on the head. In this incident it is still a matter of great concern and injury to any net bowler could pose a serious risk as they usually do not have adequate protection and are on the receiving end from some very potent strikers. Besides lack of pace and poor reaction time, improper net positioning also causes such accidents.
The training concern does not seem to have affected the form of Islamabad United in the PSL 2026. Skipper Shadab Khan led the side to three successive victories after an initial loss against Multan Sultans and they lie third on the points table behind Multan and Karachi Kings. The United will lock horns against Lahore Qalandars in their next match on the 9th April at the National Stadium, Karachi.
Apart from Shadab Khan, all-rounder Sameer Minhas have also had a great time with the bat with both striking above 170. Bowlers like Salman Irshad and Imad Wasim are also expected to pose threats against Lahore's top batters such as Mohammad Naeem and Abdullah Shafiq.
Despite Lahore winning three out of the last five encounters between these two teams, current form suggests the Islamabad team could be strong contenders. Fakhar Zaman is still absent for the Qalandars as he continues to serve the ban for Ball Tampering.
