Shubman Gill’s ODI captaincy debut got off to a rough start with the bat, as he managed just 10 runs before falling to Nathan Ellis in India’s first ODI against Australia at Perth’s Optus Stadium. The early dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had already put the tourists under pressure.

Gill was dismissed in the ninth over of the innings when Australian captain Mitchell Marsh handed the ball to Ellis for his first over. The right-arm pacer delivered a gentle ball down the leg side, which Gill attempted to glance fine but only managed a faint edge, allowing wicketkeeper Josh Philippe to take a straightforward diving catch.

Although Gill had struck a couple of boundaries, his innings lasted only 18 deliveries. You can watch the video here:

Before Gill’s dismissal, Australia’s pace attack had already struck early, sending back Virat Kohli for a duck and Rohit Sharma for just 8. Mitchell Starc outfoxed Kohli, who played a loose drive, and Cooper Connolly took a brilliant catch at point. Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood dismissed Rohit, who edged a delivery to Matt Renshaw in the slips.

Shubman Gill’s First ODI As Captain Starts With Toss Loss

On Sunday, October 19, in Perth, Shubman Gill lost the toss. The 26-year-old, who has captained India in seven Tests, has now lost the toss six times. Australian captain Mitchell Marsh chose to bowl first in the opening ODI, a decision that has paid off as the hosts have made early inroads. At the time of reporting, rain had interrupted play, with India struggling at 37/3 in 11.5 overs.

Earlier, showers briefly paused the match after Nathan Ellis’ opening over, but play quickly resumed. The remaining two ODIs will take place in Adelaide on October 23 and Sydney on October 25. Following the 50-over series, India and Australia are set to clash in a five-match T20I series.
