India’s Test captain Shubman Gill created a stir with his unexpected team choices ahead of the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. As both teams geared up for the series opener, West Indies skipper Roston Chase won the toss and opted to bat first.
With Rishabh Pant unavailable for the match, young wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel was handed the gloves, marking a significant opportunity in his Test career. Gill’s team selection also sparked discussion as he left out some big names, including Royal Challengers Bangalore star Devdutt Padikkal, despite the latter being called in as a replacement for Karun Nair.
One of the biggest talking points before the start of the match was the exclusion of Devdutt Padikkal. The left-handed batter, expected by many to make the final XI, did not feature in Gill’s plans. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna was another notable omission. Instead, Gill opted for Nitish Kumar Reddy, signalling a strategy focused on balance and versatility rather than individual reputation.
Explaining his decisions at the toss, Gill highlighted India’s aim to dominate all four home Tests this season. He noted that the surface in Ahmedabad appeared suitable for batting, but morning conditions could still assist bowlers, prompting a balanced bowling attack.
Gill’s final playing XI reflected a carefully crafted mix of experience, youth, and tactical depth. The team featured two frontline pacers—Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj—who bring both pace and consistency. They were supported by a spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav, providing a variety of spin options suited to Indian pitches. The inclusion of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy further strengthened the side’s balance, giving India an additional bowling option without compromising on batting depth.
The Indian XI lined up as: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (captain), Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj.
On the other side, West Indies fielded a relatively inexperienced squad featuring Tagenarine Chanderpaul, John Campbell, Alick Athanaze, Brandon King, Shai Hope (wk), Roston Chase (c), Justin Greaves, Jomel Warrican, Khary Pierre, Johann Layne, and Jayden Seales. As the series gets underway, Gill’s selection choices signal a clear intent—building a balanced team capable of dominating across all departments and securing a strong start to the home Test season.
