Sourav Ganguly, former India captain, has returned as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) without opposition. His second term, however, is expected to be more demanding, as the association faces financial issues and a damaged reputation due to recent controversies. Ganguly’s panel includes Bablu Kolay (secretary), Madan Mohan Ghosh (joint-secretary), Sanjay Das (treasurer), and Anu Dutta (vice-president).

The former BCCI president has succeeded his elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, who stepped down due to the six-year executive term limit set by the Lodha Committee.

CAB’s image has been tarnished by several controversies, and the performance of the Ranji Trophy team has been lacklustre. Subrata Saha, a finance committee member, was recently fined Rs 2 lakh and excluded from sub-committee activities for a conflict of interest. The association itself has also faced penalties.

In August, joint-secretary Debabrata Das was suspended for six months over financial misconduct allegations.

“Every organisation faces challenges. If any issues arise in the future, they will be handled properly,” Ganguly said.

In his new term, Ganguly plans to focus on enhancing Bengal’s first-class cricket, strengthening the Bengal Pro T20 League, promoting women’s cricket, and improving grassroots structures.

“The cricketing system must progress. I’ll make an effort to engage with our Ranji Trophy players, but there’s no need for too many leaders in the team. Ultimately, it’s the players’ skills that matter. As an administrator, I’ll provide them with the best support possible, and I will ensure it happens,” he added.

He also stressed the need for dedicated administrators to support the association’s growth.

Sourav Ganguly, who has eight years of experience as CAB and BCCI president, is committed to improving Bengal cricket with collective effort.

“I don’t view it as a challenge. With eight years of experience as both CAB and BCCI president, I will do my best.”
