Sri Lanka‘s selectors are considering replacing Charith Asalanka as T20I captain before the 2026 T20 World Cup, citing worries over his form and fitness. Chief selector Upul Tharanga confirmed that alternative leadership options are being discussed, but no decision has been finalised. Asalanka’s place in the squad is also under scrutiny due to concerns over his batting and his early departure from the Pakistan tri-series.

Charith Asalanka’s form has been a major concern in 2025, with just 156 runs from 12 T20 innings and a strike rate of 122. Sri Lanka’s T20 record under his captaincy, 11 wins and 14 losses, has sparked fresh debate on whether he is the right leader for the upcoming World Cup.

“We need to evaluate our best options after this series,” Tharanga said when asked about a possible captaincy change.

“With the World Cup approaching, we can’t afford major changes. The selectors, in consultation with the coach, will have to decide what’s best for the team,” he added.

Asalanka’s early departure from Pakistan sparked media speculation, but team management confirmed it was due to a viral fever, not disciplinary or political reasons. This came after reports linked his exit to security concerns following a suicide bombing in Pakistan, a claim the selectors have denied.

Dasun Shanaka was named captain. Tharanga confirmed this decision was made in advance to offer an additional leadership option.

“Charith is still our captain. The only reason Dasun was appointed as the stand-in captain was due to Charith’s illness. Charith remains our captain, and we haven’t decided to change that. We have always wanted Charith to lead in the World Cup. We’ll see how things unfold, but no decision has been made yet,” he mentioned.

“Charith has struggled for runs in T20s, and due to an illness, he was unfortunately forced to return home.”
