Star Zimbabwe all-rounder Sean Williams’ cricket career has come to an abrupt end following his battle with drug addiction. Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) confirmed that the veteran will no longer be part of their future plans for the national team. Williams had earlier made himself unavailable for selection ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2025.
The 39-year-old openly discussed his struggle with drug addiction and revealed that he has voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program. According to a report, Zimbabwe Cricket discovered the reason behind his withdrawal during an investigation into his absence.
The board further emphasized that all contracted players are expected to maintain professionalism, discipline, and adhere to anti-doping guidelines. It was also disclosed that Sean Williams had a record of disciplinary concerns and periods of unavailability, which had previously disrupted the team’s preparations.
As a result, the board decided to exclude the veteran from future national selection and advised him to seek professional help. Citing issues related to professionalism and ethics, the board made a decisive move regarding his place in the team.
Furthermore, his central contract will not be renewed once it expires on December 31, 2025. Zimbabwe Cricket expressed gratitude for Williams’ services to the nation and extended its best wishes for his recovery and future endeavors.
Sean Williams began his international journey with an ODI debut against South Africa in 2005, followed by his first T20I appearance versus Bangladesh in 2006.
