  • The former Indian cricketer wrote that the underperformance from a player, intentional or unintentional, could lead to them being out of the team

Sunil Gavaskar wrote a column for Sportstar, where he claimed that the Indian fans have a significant misconception in regard to the captains. The former Indian opener felt many Indian fans think that a player would deliberately underperform after steping down or being removed from captaincy.

The former Indian skipper wrote that it is far from truth. He added that if a player does not perform, he could be removed from the team. In the process, he confirmed that no player would deliberately underperform.

He further addressed whether Shubman Gill will be able to handle two former captains like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the team. Gavaskar revealed that Gill openly said that his equation with the duo hasn't changed just because of his captaincy.

What Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar?

"A significant misconception among Indian cricket fans is that if a player is replaced as captain, he will attempt to undermine the new captain by not performing to the best of his ability. Nothing can be further from the truth, for the simple fact is that if a captain has been replaced and then doesn't perform, he could be out of the team altogether. So, no player, however aggrieved he may feel at losing the captaincy, is ever going to underperform deliberately," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

"With that misconception still going strong, many are questioning if young Shubman Gill will be able to handle two former captains, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are part of the three-match One-Day International series against Australia. Gill has gone out of his way to say that his equation with them hasn't changed simply because he is the captain now," Gavaskar added.
