Taijul Islam Breaks Shakib’s Record to Become Bangladesh’s Leading Test Wicket-Taker

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam etched his name into Bangladesh’s cricketing record books when he surpassed the tally of Shakib Al Hasan to become the country’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Test matches. He achieved this landmark during the second Test against Ireland national cricket team at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, dismissing opener Andrew Balbirnie in the sixth over of the second innings. 

By then, Taijul had accumulated 248 Test wickets across 57 matches and 102 innings, with 17 five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket matches to his name. 

In contrast, Shakib had held the previous record with 246 wickets in 71 Tests and 121 innings, including 19 fifers and two ten-fers. 

Context and Significance in Bangladesh Cricket

Taijul’s achievement doesn’t only mark a personal high point but also signals a shift in Bangladesh’s bowling hierarchy. With Shakib, a batting all-rounder born largely as a specialist spinner, setting a high benchmark, Taijul’s surpassing of that mark underscores the emergence of a dedicated spin bowler wielding consistent success in the longest format.

Meanwhile, Mehidy Hasan Miraz ranks third on Bangladesh’s Test wicket-taker list, with 209 wickets in 56 matches and 98 innings, along with 13 five-fors and three ten-wicket match hauls.  Behind him come former stars such as Mohammad Rafique—fourth on the list with 100 wickets in 33 Tests and seven five-wicket hauls, and Mashrafe Mortaza, fifth with 78 wickets in 36 Tests including four five-wicket hauls. 

That the milestone came when Bangladesh were dominant in the game—having taken a strong first-innings lead against Ireland—also illustrates how Taijul’s contribution is integral to the team’s broader success. For instance, in that match he claimed 4/76 in the first innings as Bangladesh built a 211-run lead. 

What It Means Going Forward

With the national record in hand, Taijul is now the benchmark for future bowlers in Bangladesh’s Test setup. His performance reinforces the value of specialist spinners in conditions that favour them, and may encourage the emergence of more players honing that role. For Bangladesh, whose cricketing progress has often hinged on spinners delivering in home conditions, this record indicates a maturing structure in their bowling line-up.
