Former England captain Michael Vaughan criticised the team’s culture following reports of Harry Brook’s nightclub altercation in New Zealand ahead of the Ashes. He also pointed out how the board attempted to downplay the episode before the high-stakes series. Brook was involved in a confrontation with a bouncer outside a Wellington nightclub, a day before the third ODI against New Zealand.
As per The Telegraph, the bouncer believed Brook was heavily intoxicated and denied him entry. The batter later admitted the incident to team management and apologized. The board fined him £30,000 and issued a formal warning. Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, Vaughan responded to Brook’s incident by saying England’s team culture appears to encourage actions without accountability.
He cautioned that both the dressing room environment and ECB staff require major reforms to boost performance. He added:
“It doesn’t surprise me anymore. They’ve been quite loose for a while. And I guess, whether it’s consequences with shots being played over the course of the last three years that hasn’t been one. And now obviously the loose nature of the environment.”
“The Noosa trip was fine, but after what happened in New Zealand, the ECB leadership should be held accountable for trying to cover it up ahead of the Ashes. If they dealt with it there and then, it would have been a big story then. But at least you push it out of the way.”
“For it now to have broken on the back of losing 4-1 in Australia and on the back of what happened in Noosa, on the looseness of the players on the pitch in terms of their discipline with some of their strokes, it kind of tells you the whole culture around the team in the group and the ECB as well needs to change,” he added.
The England Cricket Board (ECB) has announced a detailed review of the team’s performance in Australia, acknowledging that England lacked consistency across all areas and that Australia were the rightful winners. England will next tour Sri Lanka for white-ball matches, ahead of the T20 World Cup.
