Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning captain, Arjuna Ranatunga, has surprised cricket fans with a remarkable physical transformation that recently went viral. The former skipper, once known for his sturdy build, appeared visibly slimmer and almost unrecognisable in a new picture shared on social media.

The photograph, taken during the Tamil Union’s 125th anniversary celebration, showed Ranatunga wearing a red kurta while posing alongside his former teammates Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda de Silva, and Muttiah Muralitharan. His rare public appearance quickly sparked conversations among cricket enthusiasts, many of whom expressed shock at his leaner look. Some fans even speculated about his health, while others praised his rejuvenated appearance, saying he looked “20 years younger.”

Fans React To The Viral Photo

The viral image, shared by Jayasuriya on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, drew mixed reactions from netizens who found it hard to recognise the 61-year-old cricket icon. Comments poured in, with users asking, “Is Arjuna in red? If yes, is he sick?” and others noting, “Ranatunga is unrecognisable.”

Some admirers celebrated his transformation with comments like, “Arjuna looking 20 years younger than everyone else.” The buzz around his photo highlighted how deeply Ranatunga remains embedded in the hearts of cricket fans across generations. Known for his sharp cricketing mind and leadership skills, Ranatunga led Sri Lanka to their historic 1996 World Cup victory, a milestone that changed the nation’s cricketing fortunes forever.

From Cricketing Glory To Politics

Arjuna Ranatunga’s cricket career spanned nearly two decades, culminating in his retirement from international cricket in July 2000, following a Test match against South Africa. After his retirement, he turned to politics and joined the Sinhala Urumaya party, continuing to serve his country in a different capacity. His legacy, however, remains tied to his achievements on the cricket field.

In the 1996 World Cup final, under his captaincy, Sri Lanka defeated Australia in a thrilling contest. After restricting Australia to 241/7 in 50 overs—with Aravinda de Silva taking 3/42—Sri Lanka’s top order faltered early but recovered spectacularly. Contributions from Asanka Gurusinha (65), De Silva (107), and Ranatunga (47 off 37 balls) guided the team to a seven-wicket win with 22 balls to spare. That victory not only marked a turning point in Sri Lankan cricket but also cemented Ranatunga’s status as one of the game’s most influential captains.
