Drama unfolded on the final day of the fourth Test between India and England at Old Trafford, with Harry Brook at the center of an awkward incident. Brook found himself hanging in the middle after the Indian players did not shake hands with him following Ravindra Jadeja‘s hundred.
When India came out on the final day, its second innings stood at 174/2, with two possible outcomes in the fray. A draw would seemingly keep India’s hopes alive in the five-match Test series. While England did manage to break the 188-run partnership between Shubman Gill and KL Rahul early on Day 5, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar steadfastly continued their batting effort.
The two all-rounders batted for almost the entirety of the final day, stitching a vital 203-run partnership off 334 deliveries, to ultimately secure a draw for India. However, tensions between the Indian all-rounders and the English players escalated in the final hour of play. England captain Ben Stokes, seeing his side’s hopes of a victory gradually fade, urged the two Indian players to shake hands and settle for a draw.
After the 138th over, Stokes approached Jadeja, sensing that a draw was the only possible outcome with just 15 overs left in the game. However, his request was politely declined, with Jadeja batting on 89, and Washington Sundar on 80. It frustrated Stokes, who had hoped to provide some rest for his bowlers. The Indian batters, however, were determined to complete their hundreds before considering a draw.

Afterwards, a visibly bewildered Stokes attempted to demotivate the Indian duo by sledging them. This included the England captain mocking Jadeja, asserting that he should have batted well earlier rather than aiming to complete a personal milestone against part-time bowlers at the very end of the game. While the Indian players remained unfazed, Stokes handed the ball over to Harry Brook.
It was already looking as if the home team was in no mood to continue, with Brook even bowling loose deliveries. Soon after, in the 141st over, Jadeja brought up his hundred with a six off Brook’s delivery. As he celebrated, the England vice-captain, appearing confused, extended his hand to Sundar at the other end of the crease, expecting the match to be drawn. However, Sundar ignored Brook’s sheepish gesture and instead walked towards Jadeja to celebrate, turning the situation into a comical moment.

The final day’s play continued until the 143rd over, when Washington Sundar also completed his century with two quick runs, signalling the end of the match. For the 25-year-old Tamil Nadu all-rounder, his first Test hundred for India was achieved amidst the on-field banter.
Ex-India spinner R. Ashwin, on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’, ripped into England Test captain Ben Stokes for his ‘Harry Brook’ jibe at Ravindra Jadeja, on the final day of the Old Trafford Test. Stokes had was heard mocking Jadeja for batting against Brook, which drew significant criticism.
Ashwin asserted that Stokes himself was responsible for bringing Brook into the attack because he was the one pushing for an early draw. Calling it ‘double standards’ from the English side, Ashwin argued that the players should not have blamed Jadeja for their own frustrations, and emphasized that Jadeja and Washington Sundar had every right to complete their centuries, given their hard work.
You ask, ‘You want to make a hundred against Harry [Brook]?’ He [Ravindra Jadeja] has to make a hundred. Bring any bowler, he won’t object… It was your call to bring Brook, not ours.
R. Ashwin said
Furthermore, the former Indian spinner stated that if he had been in Ben Stokes’ position, he would have wanted the opposition to play out all 15 remaining overs. He also added that Stokes should have given the ball to Brook earlier if he truly wanted to have the right to taunt Jadeja at the end.
