England suffered frequent momentum slowdowns but still managed to put an imposing 325 on the board in the opening ODI at Antigua. In reply, West Indies captain Shai Hope scored a superb 109 off 83 balls, which included seven sixes and four fours as the hosts chased down the above-par total with 1.1 overs to spare. At the post-match presentation, Hope revealed how an advice from MS Dhoni informed his decision-making while pacing the chase.
Left-arm seamer Sam Curran proved expensive as he conceded the most runs in a match by an England bowler in an international fifty-over game. Curran gave away 98 runs and broke Steve Harmison’s record, who held the unwanted distinction by leaking 97 runs. For West Indies, Gudakesh Motie, Romario Shepherd and Oshane Thomas shared two wickets apiece.
Brief scores: England 325 in 50 overs (Harry Brook 71, Zak Crawley 48; Gudakesh Motie 2-49, Oshane Thomas 2-57) lost to West Indies 326/6 in 48.5 overs (Shai Hope 109*, Alick Athanaze 66; Rehan Ahmed 2-40) by 4 wickets.
Shai Hope's unbeaten 109* leads West Indies to victory over England in the 1st ODI.
