With an unfolding fuel crisis in West Asia that has also affected the PSL, the schedule for PSL 2026 has seen several modifications. There are no matches scheduled for April 7 as a result of the fuel crisis, but this scheduling is deliberate.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was forced to re-schedule the entire season in an effort to conserve fuel and follow government mandates for decreased movement, and the number of venues were reduced from six cities to two, solely in Karachi and Lahore.

While this reduction in cities may have helped the amount of fuel used in travel; it increased the burden of scheduling matches from the earlier 6 cities and 44 matches over a period of 39 days, to a schedule involving 44 matches over 39 days across only two cities in Pakistan-that increase put immense pressure on players, groundsmen, broadcasters and all logisticians involved.

Added Break Days and Closed-Door Matches Are Crucial

To cope with this pressure, the PCB has built planned break days into the schedule that not only give teams time to recover and groundsmen time to maintain the grounds, but they also allow time to facilitate the heavy demands of traveling, broadcasting and the other operations of the PSL.

Without such days it would be incredibly difficult to sustain play and maintain the quality required for the matches without additional strain being placed on the already stretched resources in place due to limited grounds.

To reduce the strain on the fuel economy, the matches are being held behind closed doors. The reduced numbers would make the fueling costs even higher and with restricted facilities for fans in Lahore and Karachi this was the only realistic solution for continuing play, though it would surely impact on the ambiance of the matches-for the time being anyway.

Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is optimistic that once the situation improves, fans will be allowed back into the stadiums, and while for now the league must proceed under altered conditions, if the fuel crisis does ease, then fans will be in for a treat at the remaining games of the season.
