Will Sutherland has been ruled out of his scheduled return to Yorkshire County Cricket Club after being diagnosed with a shoulder stress fracture, forcing him to miss the entire Vitality Blast campaign. The development follows medical assessments conducted after the Sheffield Shield final, with the club confirming his absence ahead of the 2026 domestic T20 season.
In a statement to ESPNcricinfo, the club said,
“The Yorkshire County Cricket Club can confirm that Will Sutherland will no longer be joining the club for this year's Vitality Blast, due to injury.”
The statement added,
"News on any replacement will be communicated in due course. Everyone at Yorkshire CCC wishes him well as he starts his recovery.”
Sutherland had been expected to feature in both County Championship fixtures and the Blast, following his previous stint where he played three first-class matches and 12 T20 games.

Sutherland’s absence adds to Yorkshire’s ongoing squad adjustments. The club had already undertaken changes for the 2026 season, signing Moeen Ali on a T20 contract, alongside overseas additions Sam Whiteman and AJ Tye, both associated with Big Bash League success.
The injury setback follows another disruption, with Naveen-ul-Haq also ruled out of his planned stint. Yorkshire have since named Hasan Ali as a replacement, while Logan van Beek is set to serve as an additional overseas option. These adjustments indicate a reactive approach to availability issues ahead of the T20 schedule.
Yorkshire’s recent performances have added context to the squad changes. The side has historically struggled in the Vitality Blast, failing to secure a title and reaching Finals Day only three times in 23 seasons. Their 2025 campaign ended with eight losses in 14 matches, finishing near the bottom of the North Group standings.
The current County Championship season has also begun without momentum, with a draw against Glamorgan followed by a significant defeat to Hampshire. Head coach Anthony McGrath has indicated potential changes, with Joe Root expected to feature in the upcoming match against Sussex, while Jonny Bairstow is nearing a return from injury.
Sutherland’s absence removes a multi-format option from Yorkshire’s plans, further narrowing their combinations ahead of a condensed T20 schedule.
