Usman Khawaja is set to speak to the media at a press conference just two days before the fifth and final Ashes Test of the 2025-26 series. The Australian opener has been under the spotlight throughout this entire series, with many speculating that the upcoming match against England could mark his farewell.
At 39 years old, Khawaja isn’t exactly a spring chicken anymore, and his performances over the past year haven’t been stellar either. Things took a turn for the worse when he injured himself in Perth, missing out on batting in the second innings. Following that, he was ruled out of the pink ball Test in Brisbane, which only fueled the retirement chatter.
However, when Steve Smith got injured, Khawaja found his way back into the team for the Adelaide Test, although he lost his opener position. In the last two Tests, he’s been batting at number five, which doesn’t exactly bode well for his future. Still, Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald has made it clear that Khawaja hasn’t suggested he’ll retire after the Sydney Test.
As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, Khawaja will face the press on Friday, January 2. While Cricket Australia hasn’t officially confirmed the speakers, it’s anticipated that the seasoned batter will address the swirling rumors about his retirement from Test cricket.
Michael Clarke, Khawaja’s former teammate and a legendary Australian captain, believes the left-handed opener will call it a day in Sydney. He’s hopeful that the 39-year-old will finish his career on a high note, perhaps with a century. Given that Khawaja has been selected for Australia’s squad for the fifth Ashes Test, there’s definitely a chance for that to happen.
“I think this will be Usman’s farewell Test match. I don’t think it’s a token selection; they obviously picked him for Melbourne, so if they’ve gone that way, you pick him for Sydney as well. But I think he’ll retire after this Test match. Australia will win the series. Hopefully, he goes out with a big score. I’d love to see Uz make a hundred at the SCG and walk away on a high because not many people get that opportunity,”
