This Thursday, one of the most unique and exciting tournaments on the whole darting calendar gets underway as the 2025 World Cup of Darts begins in Germany. Among the leading pre-tournament favourites are the Scottish duo and former champions, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright.
Partnering for the eighth time in World Cup of Darts history, there is plenty of experience within the Scottish team. Their peak as a pair came back in 2019 when they comfortable beat the Irish duo of Steve Lennon and William O'Connor in the final, becoming the first non-English/Dutch team to win the World Cup of Darts in the process.
In a slight chance to the order this time though, for the first time since 2013, Anderson enters as the higher-ranked player, after Wright has endured a steady slide down the Order of Merit over the last year or so.
With Anderson now 54 and Wright 55, 'The Flying Scotsman' is also well aware that this could be one of the last times the two Scottish darting superstars team up together. “It’s getting bloody close. We have 110 years between us on that stage!" Anderson laughs in conversation with Online Darts. “We could still be in the top 16 of the rankings for the next couple of years. So we will just have to see how Peter goes and how my body holds up."
Make no mistake though, whether this is his final year in the World Cup team, or if he carries on for another decade, Anderson will be giving his all every time he dons the blue of the Scots. “It’s an honour. Even when I was in the BDO playing for Scotland it was great," he explains. “Like I say now we feel like a pair of grandads now with the youngsters coming through. If we can click, we can give anyone a game of darts so fingers crossed.”
