Australian Darts Masters trophy to be named after Kyle Anderson in touching tribute to former darts star
PDC

The Australian Darts Masters trophy will receive a new name from 2026, now known as the Kyle Anderson Trophy, in a touching tribute to the late darts player's legacy.

Anderson made a name for himself in the sport when he first appeared on the Sydney Darts Masters back in 2013, before four years later going on to become victorious at the Auckland Darts Masters in 2017. He defeated Gary Anderson, Simon Whitlock and James Wade before overcoming upcoming star Corey Cadby in the final.

2017 was a big year for The Original, who claimed his first PDC title in Players Championship 17, and hit a nine-darter on the way to narrowly being defeated by Michael van Gerwen in the European Championships semi-finals.

Anderson returned to Australia in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and unfortunately, a year later passed away at the age of 33 due to health issues linked to the virus.

Anderson's legacy honoured

From next year, whoever wins the Australian Darts Masters will have the honour of lifting the Kyle Anderson Trophy. PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter acknowledged the achievements of Anderson on the World Series, labelling him as a 'trailblazer' after his victory in Auckland.

"We're pleased that we can recognise Kyle with the introduction of the Kyle Anderson Trophy at the Australian Darts Masters," said Matt Porter. "Kyle was a trailblazer for what we want the World Series to be; a platform for domestic players to compete on the big stage and eventually progress to become PDC professionals.

"His former schoolmate Damon Heta has since followed that same path and it's fitting that future winners of the Australian Darts Masters will get to lift the Kyle Anderson Trophy. We'll work with Kyle's family to create an appropriate design and look forward to unveiling the trophy next year."

Anderson's wife Tara also shared her gratitude to the PDC, as she said: "On behalf of the family, we are so grateful to the PDC for wanting to honour Kyle in such a way. We can't wait to see the trophy come to life next year."
