'Been giving me lots of support': Luke Humphries thanks Phil Taylor after realising Premier League dream

Luke Humphries has won the Premier League Darts for the first time in his career. 'Cool Hand Luke' defeated compatriot and defending champion Luke Littler 11-8 in the final of the playoffs. The 30-year-old thus realizes the 'Triple Crown' dream after also winning the World Darts Championship and World Matchplay earlier in his career.

Humphries defeated Nathan Aspinall in the semifinals. In the final, he overcame a bad start to still win quite comfortably in the end. For Humphries it is already his second major title this year, after he also sealed the Winmau World Masters earlier this year. For sealing this title, he also seals 275,000 pounds.

"Honestly that one means the world to me. That was the one that I was missing. I said in all my pre match build up that was the one I wanted. I've done it now, if I don't win another title I'm happy because I've done the three hardest ones to do," said Humphries to Sky Sports.

Select company

With his victory, "Cool Hand Luke" joins extremely select company. "I've joined the elusive group of me, Gary Anderson, Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen. I must say to Phil Taylor thanks so much as he's been giving me lots of support the last few weeks really helped me. So Phil if you're watching thank you. Given me a lot of support, given me a lot of advice and he gave me that extra boost tonight."

Despite his athletic combativeness, Humphries also had warm words for his good friend and finalist Luke Littler. "I love him to bits honestly, he's one of my best mates on tour, he's so good. He wasn't at his best tonight, nor was I but I managed to get in front of him."

"When I was 3-0 down I thought the game was going to get away from me but yeah he's a great player, great lad. I'll get in early before he trounces everyone to be honest."
