Brody Klinge, Tim Pusey and Robbie King split the titles at the ADA Tour in Adelaide last weekend. Major absentee was Raymond Smith, who was out of action due to commitments in England.
This was notable, because on the opening weekend of the new ADA Tour, 'The Guru' had won all four tournaments with an overwhelming display of power. His absence now created new opportunities - and they were eagerly seized.
One of the men who benefited from Smith's absence was Tim Pusey. 'The Magnet,' who previously lost three finals to Smith, did strike this time. In the third tournament of the weekend, he grabbed his first ADA victory of the season, cementing his second spot in the rankings.
However, the player who impressed most in Adelaide was Brody Klinge. The Australian was still missing during the opening weekend, but quickly made up for that deficit. On Friday, he defeated Ben Robb in the final of ADA Tour 5 and took his first title. His second final victory immediately followed a day later, this time against Robbie King.
Thanks to those two victories, Klinge stormed to fourth place in the rankings. Remarkably, he also currently occupies the third spot at rival league DPA - a testament to his strong form and status as one of the leading players on the Australian continent.
Robbie King also got to end the weekend with his head held high. The former World Championship participant lost his first final of the weekend, but took revenge on Sunday by defeating Harley Kemp in the last final. With that, he added another valuable title to his record and keeps his sight on a high final ranking.
Despite his absence this weekend, Raymond Smith remains proudly at the top of the rankings. Still, 'The Guru' feels the hot breath of Tim Pusey on his neck. With four tournaments left to play, the battle for the coveted World Cup ticket is far from decided.
Interesting detail: Smith appears to be setting his sights on participating in the WDF World Championship, which leaves the door ajar for the number two ranked player. If Smith actually opts for Lakeside, the spot to Alexandra Palace will go to the highest-ranked player behind it - and that would currently be Pusey.
The conclusion will follow on Sept. 7, when the final weekend of the ADA Tour is completed. The stakes? A spot on the biggest stage of them all.
