Cameron Menzies experienced a nightmarish start to his debut at the 2025 World Matchplay in dramatic fashion. The 36-year-old Scot caused consternation in the fourth leg of his match against Danny Noppert when, to everyone's surprise, he busted with a score of 180.
Trailing 3-0, Menzies had a prime opportunity to take his first leg of the match. With 178 points left, he knew he had to reduce the score to a finishable position - since 178 is impossible to finish with three darts.
After two excellent triple 20s - good for 120 points - Menzies had every opportunity to put up a sensible score with his third arrow. Instead, however, he went for the triple 20 again, hit it, writing a completely unnecessary 180 on the board - which immediately busted him. His turn was invalidated and Noppert immediately took advantage by winning the leg to himself.
The action caused disbelief among fans both in the venue and at home in front of the tube. On social media, the incident was immediately widely reported. One fan wrote, "No words,"
Another responded: "Menzies really brought the chaos." A third joked,"First and last time I bet on Menzies."
And someone else posted simply, "Absolute brain fart that from him."
From then on, things went only downhill for Menzies. He couldn't find his rhythm anymore and eventually had to swallow a heavy 10-2 defeat against the solid playing Noppert. With an average of only 81.35 over the entire match, Menzies could not claim more.
The Scot, currently ranked No. 34 in the world, thus experienced a World Matchplay debut to quickly forget - although his "bust" on 180 will undoubtedly be discussed in the darts world for a long time to come.
From not being able to open his water bottle to the bust to his overall showing, very much a debut to forget for the eccentric Scot.
