Gerwyn Price came agonisingly close to causing an upset in the first semi-final of the 2025 Premier League Darts play-offs — but ultimately fell short against Luke Littler after a dramatic momentum shift late in the match.
The Welshman looked in fine form early on, breaking throw four times and leading 6-4 and 7-6 in what was shaping up to be a tense, tactical affair. However, he couldn’t find the killer blow to pull away. Littler, showing his trademark composure under pressure, launched a blistering late surge that turned the match on its head.
‘The Nuke’ produced a 14-darter followed by a 13-darter to flip a 6-7 deficit into an 8-7 lead. He then hammered home two 12-darters in back-to-back legs to close out the match 10-7 — sealing his spot in the final in emphatic style.
One of the pivotal moments came in the 12th leg with Price leading 6-5. Sitting on 100, he looked poised to extend his lead — but misfired at the crucial moment. With one dart remaining and 20 required, he accidentally hit double 15 instead of double 10, busting the score and handing the initiative back to Littler.
Looking back on the turning point, Price didn’t mince his words. Posting on Instagram after the match, he wrote:
“Thanks everyone for the support, crowd was great. Fell off the rails after busting the ton out which I think cost the match.”From that point on, the momentum was firmly with Littler, and Price was unable to recover.
The former rugby player won’t feature at this weekend’s European Darts Open in Leverkusen — but he already has other plans lined up. “Nice break away to Florida in the morning,” he added. “All the best to whoever is in the final.”
Despite the disappointment, Price received plenty of support both in the arena and online, and his performance once again underlined his ability to go toe-to-toe with the sport’s very best. A rest in the sun might be just what ‘The Iceman’ needs before throwing himself back into the thick of the darts calendar.
