Gerwyn Price breaks silence on shock Hungarian Darts Trophy withdrawal: 'Was really ill all day Sunday'

Gerwyn Price has broken his silence after his shock withdrawal from the Hungarian Darts Trophy on Sunday night, revealing he was struck down by illness shortly before his eagerly anticipated quarter-final clash with Luke Littler in Budapest.

Posting on Instagram early Monday morning, Price wrote: “Not sure if I caught a 24hr bug but that’s what I’m hoping and it doesn’t hang around, was really ill all day Sunday, hopefully it goes today. Thanks everyone for the messages.”

‘The Iceman’ had been due to headline the evening session against Littler, in what was billed as one of the matches of the tournament. Instead, fans inside the MVM Dome were left stunned when PDC commentator Dan Dawson announced minutes before the walk-ons that Price had pulled out due to medical reasons.

His withdrawal handed Littler a bye straight through to the semi-finals and robbed the Budapest crowd of a blockbuster showdown, but also raised questions about his condition. The Welshman has endured a disrupted season, recently returning from a hand injury that forced him to miss ProTour events and a previous European Tour stop after a hospital stay. While the PDC confirmed only that his withdrawal was for medical reasons, Price’s social media update suggests this setback is unrelated, with the former world champion struck by a sudden bug.

It marks another frustrating interruption in Price’s year, which has seen flashes of his old form tempered by recurring fitness concerns. For now, Price will hope his illness proves short-lived, with major events fast approaching and his battle for silverware in 2025 far from over.

In Budapest meanwhile, it was a night of surprises as Littler lost that semi-final to Danny Noppert, before the Dutchman in turn, was stunned in the final by German prospect Niko Springer, who secured the first European Tour title of his burgeoning career.
