After a nightmare evening in Aberdeen, Michael van Gerwen faces a single, narrow path to secure his place in the Premier League Darts Playoffs.
Heading into Night 15 of the Premier League, Van Gerwen held a slender one-point advantage over long-time rival Nathan Aspinall. But the Dutchman’s fortunes took a sharp downturn in Scotland, as Aspinall defeated him in the quarterfinals before going on to claim the nightly title.
The result sees 'The Asp' open up a four-point gap over Van Gerwen, who now sits outside the top four with just one night of league play remaining.
That leaves only one scenario in which Van Gerwen can still qualify: he must win the final night in Sheffield on Thursday, May 22. His campaign begins with an immediate rematch against Aspinall in the quarterfinals. Should he get past that hurdle, a potential semifinal clash with league leader Luke Littler could await. Littler is set to face Stephen Bunting in his opening match.
The opposite side of the draw features Luke Humphries against Rob Cross, while Gerwyn Price takes on Chris Dobey.
Night 16 – Thursday, May 22
Utilita Arena, Sheffield
Quarterfinals (7pm)
Luke Littler v Stephen Bunting
Nathan Aspinall v Michael van Gerwen
