'I do things that I’m not proud of' - Cameron Menzies opens up on seeking professional help to calm on-stage antics

Cameron Menzies has revealed he’s been working with a life coach to help manage the mental demands of professional darts and improve his emotional control on stage.

The Scottish star, currently ranked world No. 36, opened up about the psychological side of the sport following an impressive run to the quarter-finals at the European Darts Open. Menzies claimed a dramatic 6-5 win over defending champion Dave Chisnall, followed by a convincing 6-3 victory against Ritchie Edhouse, before falling to Jonny Clayton in the last eight.

It continues what’s been a standout season for the Ayrshire thrower, who earlier this year picked up his maiden ProTour title at Players Championship 11 and reached two further finals on the circuit.

Behind the scenes, though, Menzies admits he's been working hard on the mental side of his game. “Social media is quite bad that way. But I do agree with what a lot of people say," he explains to Unicorn Darts. “I went to a life coach and I try now not to show too much. I still do it, but I’m not as bad as what I was before."

The 34-year-old explained that his decision to seek help stemmed from a desire to present himself more calmly under pressure. Menzies is candid about the nerves he experiences on stage — and how they’ve occasionally led to behaviour he regrets.

“It’s because I am really nervous – I do things that I’m not proud of. I’m trying to keep it a little more intact and inside because I don’t want to show the opponent things," Menzies explains. “I’m sometimes not playing great and I’m fighting my own demons in my head because I am trying so hard. But yeah, I’m just trying to be a little more chilled and relaxed."

“I might look that way but trust me – I don’t feel that way!" Menzies concludes. "I’m just trying to become a better person and a better player.”
