The league phase of the 2025 Premier League Darts is nearing a conclusion. Next Thursday's final weekly showdown of the season will decide who joins Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price at the 02 Arena in the playoffs - Michael van Gerwen or Nathan Aspinall?
"I've actually enjoyed this Premier League campaign more than any other one that I've ever played in," former World Matchplay champion Aspinall told Sky Sports after his win last Thursday in Aberdeen. "I think the standard has been out of this world. I think all eight players have done themselves credit. I think it's been the most competitive Premier League there has ever been, the most entertaining, the most exciting, and for me to come out in the top four with these amazing players, I'm buzzing."
Analyst and former Lakeside champion Mark Webster also sees Aspinall in an excellent position heading into the playoffs: "He's almost there, it's in his hands if he takes care of Michael in the quarter-finals next week, he's in the top four and even if he doesn't the chances are he's going to be there anyway," explains the Welshman. "He's put himself in a brilliant position. He thinks, judging by his reaction last night, that he's done enough."
The Aspinall win wasn't the only story of the night in Aberdeen. Luke Littler and Luke Humphries put on an spectacle, in one of the greatest ever Premier League matches in their quarter-final. Webster saw the match as confirmation of the level difference between Littler-Humphries and the rest of the field of competitors.
"It was one of those games you've got to watch in disbelief and it's just the pace they play at as well, it makes it easier on the eye," he reflected afterwards. "It was scary and it kind of showed why they're streets ahead of the rest. It was a brilliant game and for me maybe a dress rehearsal for the final."
Gerwyn Price in turn made a piece of history by throwing his fifth nine darter in Premier League Darts, this time in his quarterfinal against Stephen Bunting. The Welshman - who also recorded a perfect leg on the tenth day of play in Manchester - produced the highlight late in the match, bringing the total number of nine darters this season to five.
"Price will use Sheffield as a practice night and get himself ready for a big night at the O2 and effectively a separate competition where he will be looking to spoil the party," Webster comments on his compatriot in conclusion.
Perfection from Price!
