Wales booked their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup of Darts in emphatic fashion. Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price eased past the Philippines with an 8–2 victory and will now face Hong Kong in the next round, after they overcame Sweden 8–4.
The Philippines had shocked Belgium in the previous round, but Paolo Nebrida and Lourence Ilagan found the Welsh duo far too strong. Wales finished with an average of 96.43—a solid effort in the pairs format.
"We go out to win. We’re big friends off the oche and behind the oche, and the banter we have shows on stage," said Clayton. "We believe in each other—high scores, low scores, whatever—it’s about fighting for each other. That’s massive for us as a team."
Price added that the humid conditions and playing style of their opponents made it tricky to find a rhythm early on. "It was difficult conditions—quite warm—and they weren’t the quickest of players, so it was hard to get into a rhythm. But I thought we did really well to average 96 in those conditions. It showed we played really well."
Wales are two-time winners of the tournament and remain one of the favourites for the 2025 title. "We’ve been here, we’ve lifted the trophy, we’ve got experience," said Clayton. "They can talk as much as they want—we just concentrate on our game."
For Price, this year marks a return to the World Cup after missing the 2024 edition. "It was tough for me to miss last year. I supported Jonny and Jim all the way, but unfortunately it didn’t work out for them. I was eager to get back into the World Cup this year. Thankfully I’m back, I’m loving it, and we’ve won our first game—looking forward to the rest."
Price is confident that there’s even more to come from the Welsh pair. "I don’t think we played our A-game. The heat didn’t help, and opponents sometimes affect you. But we’ve got more in the tank—we’ll show it when we need to."
