Ross Montgomery is the new World Seniors Darts Champion of Champions. The 62-year-old Scot defeated defending champion Richie Howson 8-5 in the final in Portsmouth. For Montgomery it is already the second major title this year on the senior tour, after he also managed to win the World Championship in February.
Montgomery already has a very long career behind him. He started with the BDO, where he was active for many years and won the Finder Masters and the Dutch Open twice. He also played thirteen times at the BDO World Championship, but never made it past the quarterfinals.
In 2022, somewhat surprisingly at age 60, he still made the switch to the PDC, where he captured a Tour Card at Q-School early that year. In late 2023, however, he lost that Tour Card again, and since then Montgomery has appeared on the senior tour combined with a few appearances at the MODUS Super Series.
Special
Earlier this year, he won the World Senior Championship by defeating Graham Usher in the final, and so, just a few months later, a second major title follows with the Champion of Champions. "It's getting a habit. I've been playing this game for a while. Fair play to Richie absolutely class gentleman. He teaches me how to fish, he cannot teach me how to play snooker."
"3-0 down as I said to a lot of players when I was captain of my country, never give up. Put the fire in your belly and just get the head on and get on with it."
Once again it was Howson who reached a final with The Owl scooping the title last year and continuing to show that well into his 50's, he is still a class act on the oche and as Paul Starr and then Montgomery quipped also on the snooker table.
But it is 'The Boss' that reigns supreme in Portsmouth this week with the Matchplay also announced for later in the year in Epsom.
"It's becoming a habit..."
