Luke Littler & Luke Humphries almost break world record in Aberdeen Premier League Darts classic
Simon O'Connor/PDC

We rarely witness a match as spectacular as the one between Luke Humphries and Luke Littler on Thursday night in Aberdeen, during Night 15 of the Premier League Darts. The world’s top two players put on a dazzling display of darts, with 180s flying in like hotcakes. The standard was so high, they nearly broke a world record.

The match started cautiously, with Humphries opening with a 14-darter and quickly doubling his lead with another 14-dart leg. Then the quality skyrocketed. Littler responded with a blistering 10-darter to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Humphries restored a two-leg cushion with a 15-darter to make it 3-1. Littler wasn’t fazed though — he leveled the match at 3-3 with back-to-back 12-darters.

What followed was a breathtaking seventh leg. Humphries hit two 180s, Littler added one of his own, and with Humphries waiting on 81, Littler took out a stunning 144 finish — his third consecutive 12-darter — to edge ahead 4-3.

The eighth leg was the weakest of the match, as Littler took it in 17 darts to go 5-3 up. He then wrapped things up in style with a brilliant 11-darter.

The stats were mouthwatering. Humphries hit nine 180s, Littler five. But it was Littler who posted the higher average: a remarkable 115.96 compared to Humphries’ 110.01.

Their combined average of 225.97 was just shy of a world record — the second highest ever recorded in a televised match.

Only Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis have done better, combining for 228.65 in a 2007 Premier League match where Wright averaged 119.50 and Lewis 109.15.
