Michael van Gerwen has temporarily swapped tungsten for sunshine as he takes a well-earned break in Ibiza. Following a turbulent spell on and off the oche — including a disappointing World Matchplay campaign — the three-time world champion is recharging his batteries with some family time before shifting focus back to his game in September.

The 35-year-old Dutchman was knocked out in the second round at Blackpool by Josh Rock, marking another early exit in a major tournament. Not long after, Van Gerwen was seen letting off steam at Tomorrowland in Belgium, enjoying the world-famous dance festival alongside friends, including former Dutch footballer Eljero Elia.

But the party atmosphere soon gave way to a more peaceful setting. Van Gerwen has since travelled to Ibiza with his children, Zoë and Mike, where he’s been soaking up the sun and enjoying time on a luxury yacht with close friends. Social media posts show the Dutch star visibly more relaxed, relishing the quality time away from the competitive grind.

The break comes after a challenging period, both professionally and personally. Van Gerwen has been struggling to rediscover his dominant form of old, and earlier this year, he endured personal setbacks. In May, he confirmed his divorce from wife Daphne, and also revealed that his father had been diagnosed with cancer again.

He made his return to the big stage at the end of June, but his performances have yet to reflect the levels that once made him a near-unstoppable force on the tour.

Meanwhile, the PDC season has rolled on in his absence. During Van Gerwen’s time away, compatriot Jermaine Wattimena claimed his maiden PDC title, and MVG has now slipped outside the top 120 in the Players Championship Order of Merit. He’ll need to claw his way back into the top 64 if he wants to feature at the Players Championship Finals later this year.

For now, though, the Dutchman remains in Ibiza, enjoying a brief pause from the spotlight. But come September, Van Gerwen knows it’s time to knuckle down — the darting world waits for no one.
