'One or two characters that the fans don't favour': Gerwyn Price on why fans now cheer him in Premier League
Steve Welsh/PDC

With one match day remaining in the regular phase of Premier League Darts, Gerwyn Price has already assured himself of a place in the playoffs. The 40-year-old Welshman is currently third in the standings with 24 points, as many as the number four, Nathan Aspinall. Since Michael van Gerwen (the current number five in the standings) and Nathan Aspinall already meet in the quarter-finals on the final day of play, obviously only one of these two players can still pass Price.

Price is doing extremely well in Premier League Darts this year. Where last year he missed out on the playoffs by finishing in penultimate place, this year he already won three matchdays. This gave him, with one match day to go, certainty of participation in the playoffs.

'The Iceman' is aiming for his first final victory in Premier League Darts, having already been a losing finalist once in 2023 (11-5 defeat to Michael van Gerwen). If Price remains in third place after the final day of play, he will take on Luke Humphries in the playoffs at London's O2 Arena.

Prior to this edition of the Premier League Darts, there was a particular buzz about the field of participants. Many followers found it incomprehensible that players like Price and Aspinall, who had not had a good year, were still selected for this prestigious PDC major. But now that both Price and Aspinall look set to qualify for the playoffs, they have answered the critics.

Public favorites

Price, however, also has his opinion on this year's field of competitors. "Maybe there's one or two characters in there now that the fans probably don't favour. So they look to go somewhere else and if they want to cheer me on and help me get over the winning line. I'm happy with that."

"I think there's a couple of characters in the Premier League that some venues don't really like as well."
