PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit Update: Ross Smith passes Michael van Gerwen, Dave Chisnall back in first place

Ross Smith was able to take advantage of top names not playing in Hildesheim and won the sixteenth Players Championship tournament of the season on Tuesday. It earned him 15,000 pounds, moving him from sixth place to fourth on the Pro Tour Order of Merit with 154,500 pounds.

In the coming weeks, Smith can open the attack on the top three, knowing that all three have Euro Tour titles to defend later this season. Dave Chisnall did regain the lead over Josh Rock, but the difference between Chisnall and Rock is only 2,000 pounds. Like Rock, Martin Schindler also stands at 174,000 pounds, while Chisnall stands at 176,000 pounds.

Stephen Bunting holds the fifth spot with £147,000, followed by Van Gerwen with £140,000. Completing the top-10 are Luke Littler (133,500 pounds), Gian van Veen (132,500 pounds), Damon Heta (132,000 pounds) and Cameron Menzies (128,750 pounds).

Smith also passed Michael van Gerwen who had a disappointing foray before withdrawing from the second event. On Monday, Van Gerwen lost 6-5 to Dominik Gruellich in the first round of Players Championship 15. 'Mighty Mike' then decided to opt out of Players Championship 16 and thus returned home without any pounds.

World number one Luke Humphries is only in thirteenth place with £120,500. That still leaves behind such top players as Jonny Clayton (fourteenth), Gary Anderson (fifteenth) and Gerwyn Price (also fifteenth).

Through the Pro Tour, players can qualify for the televised tournaments. At tournaments such as the World Matchplay and the World Grand Prix, in addition to the top-16 of the world rankings, the sixteen best players of the Pro Tour ranking are also invited. The same applies to Euro Tour tournaments, while the top-32 at Players Championship tournaments have protected status in the draw.
