Players Championship Order of Merit update: Disaster week sees Gerwyn Price distanced at the top by Gian van Veen

Gian van Veen has strengthened his position at the top of the Players Championship Order of Merit following another impressive run in Leicester, while Gerwyn Price endured a disappointing week, suffering early exits in both events he competed in.

It was a week to forget for Price. The Welshman, who began the Leicester triple-header ranked first, skipped Tuesday’s Players Championship 17 before returning for events 18 and 19. However, he crashed out in the opening round on both occasions, failing to add to his tally of £57,000.

Meanwhile, Van Veen capped off the latest three-event block with a quarter-final appearance on Thursday, adding to his semi-final finish earlier in the week. A last-32 defeat on Wednesday was his only blip, but his consistent form sees his total earnings rise to £61,500 – extending his advantage at the summit.

Chris Dobey now sits in third place on £55,500, just ahead of Damon Heta (£52,500), Ross Smith (£52,000), Cameron Menzies (£49,500) and Josh Rock (£47,500) in what is becoming a tightly packed chasing pack.

James Wade made a significant leap up the standings thanks to his title win at Players Championship 19. ‘The Machine’ defeated Scott Williams in Thursday’s final to collect the £15,000 top prize, moving him up to eighth in the Order of Merit on £45,500. Gary Anderson (£41,000) and Dirk van Duijvenbode (£40,500) round out the current top 10.

In total, 34 Players Championship events will be staged this season. The top 64 players on the Order of Merit at the end of the year will qualify for the Players Championship Finals, held in Minehead, with qualification shaping up to be fiercely competitive as the race hots up.
