Players Championship Order of Merit Update: Price has regained lead position, Van Gerwen drops to 100th place

Gerwyn Price has regained first place on the Players Championship Order of Merit. 'The Iceman' won his third title of the season last Wednesday in Leicester.

The Welshman had to warm up in the first rounds, but in the final stages there was finally no match for Price. He first defeated Darius Labanauskas (6-2), Adam Lipscombe (6-3), Matthew Dennant (6-4) and Mario Vandenbogaerde (6-4) to reach the quarterfinals.

Then the former rugby player's level went up rapidly. In the last eight he was 6-1 too strong for Jonny Clayton and threw an average of no less than 112.25 per turn. He nearly matched that average in the semifinals, where Ian White was swept aside 7-2. In that match, Price threw an average of 110.80. Price then triumphed 8-7 against Josh Rock in a thrilling final, earning him the top prize of 15,000 pounds.

With 53,500 pounds, he now tops the rankings. Cameron Menzies, Tuesday's winner of Players Championship 11, is number two with 45,000 pounds. Gian van Veen is the highest-ranked Dutchman in third place with £43,000. Josh Rock and Gary Anderson complete the top five.

The top-64 of the rankings may compete in the Players Championship Finals in Minehead at the end of the season. That means there is still work to be done for Michael van Gerwen, who is currently in a disappointing shared 100th place.

Van Gerwen played six Players Championship tournaments this season, but was eliminated in the first round in four of them. Big names such as Nathan Aspinall (92nd), Kim Huybrechts (95th) and Dimitri van den Bergh (112th) are not currently in the top-64 either.
