Raymond Smith took full control of the opening weekend of the brand new Australian Darts Association Tour. At the Queensland Darts Centre in Brendale, the 45-year-old dart player from Brisbane won all four tournaments, following an impressive winning streak of 23 wins in a row.
The Australian tour, which had its baptism of fire from June 27 to 29, brought together more than seventy players for the calendar's first four events. But it was Smith who managed to steal the show.
On Friday, Smith immediately made his mark. In the opening tournament he waltzed over Jordan Lacey and former World Cup contender Gordon Mathers with averages of 100 and 97 respectively. In the semifinals, he did not allow Mal Cuming to take a single leg (6-0), before taking care of Tim Pusey in the final (6-2).
On Saturday, Smith's hunger proved by no means satisfied. In the second event, he took out Stuart Coburn and James Bailey in succession, before again knocking off Pusey, this time 6-3.
Later on Saturday, Smith also credited the third tournament, albeit with a little more difficulty. En route to the final, he lost only six legs in five matches, but in the final match he had to go deep against New Zealander Ben Robb. Smith survived a matchdart and eventually prevailed 6-5.
The fourth tournament on Sunday followed a similar pattern. Smith began with two whitewash victories against Ben Justice and Jacob Pattison. However, an elimination was imminent in the quarterfinals, as Robbie King squandered several chances to finish off a 5-3 lead. Smith seized his chance and turned the game in his favor after all.
In the semifinals, he resumed his usual dominance with a 6-1 win against Mal Cuming. The final brought a clash with Pusey for the third time that weekend, and as before, Smith convincingly prevailed 6-2, this time with an average of 95.
With these four titles under his belt, Raymond Smith is the clear leader on the ADA Tour's Order of Merit. At the end of the season, the number one will earn a coveted spot at the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace, which will be expanded to 128 participants this year.
But he has already stated that he will play Lakeside instead so Tim Pusey known for his nickname the Magnet is likely to benefit.
