The Dutch Darts Championship continues on to Saturday as the big names find their way into proceedings. Michael Smith, Jonny Clayton, Chris Dobey among others start their tournaments here.
Rosmalen hosts the seventh Euro Tour tournament of the season this weekend. It is the fifth time the Dutch Darts Championship has been played. The first edition took place in 2018 in Maastricht and was won by Ian White, who settled with Ricky Evans (8-5) in the final. Four years later, the Dutch Darts Championship moved to Zwolle. Then it was Michael Smith who got to lift the cup. Bullyboy' won the final 8-7 against Danny Noppert, for now the only Dutch finalist in the history of this event.
Since the 2022 edition, this tournament does appear annually on the Euro Tour calendar. However, for the third time in a row it got a different location. In 2023 it was Leeuwarden that hosted the Dutch Darts Championship. The title was a triumph for Dave Chisnall after an 8-5 victory over Luke Humphries. Starting in 2024, the event will be held in Rosmalen, which is now playing for the second year in a row. Josh Rock is the defending champion, after taking the win against Jonny Clayton (8-4).

Damon Heta v Jeffrey Sparidaans
The afternoon in Rosmalen will be kicked off by Damon Heta, who will take on Jeffrey Sparidaans. The 31-year-old Dutchman surprised in the opening round by winning 6-2 over Andrew Gilding. Against fifth-seeded Heta, however, he faces an even tougher task. Sparidaans was around 92 average in his first match and will probably have to raise his average a bit more to make it difficult for Heta. Supported by the home crowd, however, anything is possible.
Dave Chisnall v Ritchie Edhouse
Next, Dave Chisnall takes on Ritchie Edhouse in an all-English duel. 'Chizzy' won two European Tour tournaments last year, but is still dry this year. Edhouse got off with a scare in the first round after Kim Huybrechts missed several matchdarts. 'Madhouse' also made a noise toward the crowd that started whistling at him in the last leg. Chisnall may not be in the best form of his career this year, but he still starts this match as the favorite.
Michael Smith v Ryan Joyce
Michael Smith has now dropped to 20th place in the world rankings, far beyond the former world champion's capabilities. This year has not been a high flyer for 'BullyBoy' either, who faces a dangerous opponent in Ryan Joyce. Although Joyce got off with a scare in the first round after a very narrow 6-5 victory against Jeffrey de Zwaan.
Jonny Clayton v Max Hopp
Fourth-seeded Jonny Clayton got the year off to a great start with a final at the Winmau World Masters and a semifinal at the UK Open. He also won a Players Championship in mid-April. Clayton will take on Max Hopp in the second round. The still only 28-year-old German used to be known as a top talent and returned to the PDC Pro Tour early this year, after several years of absence. Hopp defeated Luke Woodhouse 6-3 in the opening round yesterday and will now want to stunt against Clayton as well.
Chris Dobey v Daryl Gurney
Chris Dobey failed to qualify for the playoffs of Premier League Darts, but 'Hollywood' showed his good form with a semifinal on the final day of play. In Rosmalen, he will take on the always dangerous Daryl Gurney in the second round. For the Northern Irishman, two-time major winner, it is often all or nothing. In the first round it was all or nothing and he won 6-4 against Maik Kuivenhoven. Wait and see if he can also give Dobey a hard time.
Martin Schindler v Martin Lukeman
Martin Schindler won the Austrian Darts Open earlier this year and will be eager to add to that the Dutch Darts Championship. However, he must get past Martin Lukeman in the first instance. The 40-year-old Englishman defeated Schindler's compatriot Lukas Wenig 6-2 in the opening round yesterday. Still, it should be clear that Schindler starts this match as a towering favorite.
Danny Noppert v Mario Vandenbogaerde
The penultimate match of the afternoon session features a Dutch-Belgian duel. Twelfth-seeded Danny Noppert will take on Mario Vandenbogaerde. 'Super Mario' particularly impressed in the first round by beating Niels Zonneveld 6-4 with an average of just under one hundred. Vandenbogaerde can do good business this weekend towards retaining his PDC Tour Card at the end of the year. Noppert will be wary though, he knows all too well what the 52-year-old Belgian is capable of.
Ryan Searle v Ryan Meikle
The afternoon session concludes with an all-English duel when Ryan Searle and Ryan Meikle take on each other. Meikle provided a small stunt in the first round by beating Joe Cullen 6-1. However, 'The Barber' did not really impress and presumably Searle will have to do a lot better to have a real chance of winning;
The tournament will be broadcast by PDC TV. As usual with Euro Tour tournaments, the Dutch Darts Championship consists of three tournament days. The afternoon sessions start daily at 12 p.m., while the evening sessions start at 6 p.m.
The first round will take place on Friday. The 16 Pro Tour players are then paired with one of the 16 players who managed to get through the various qualifying tournaments. The top-16 seeded players enter the tournament on Saturday in the second round. The denouement of the tournament follows on Sunday, with the third round first in the afternoon session. Sunday night the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will follow.
All participants starting from the first round are guaranteed £1250 in prize money, while the top-16 enter from the second round and receive £2,500 anyway. This amount eventually rises to the grand prize of £30,000 for the winner.
An important detail is that players who are automatically seeded via the Order of Merit and lose their first match will not be awarded prize money on the various rankings. This does apply to qualifiers who are later designated as seeded by the withdrawal of others.
