Luke Littler is only 18 years old, but has quickly emerged as one of the most famous darts players in the world. The reigning world champion is aware of his status and is eager to use it for charity - provided it doesn't involve too great a risk to himself.
England hosts an annual Soccer Aid, a benefit competition that raises money for UNICEF. Two teams, made up of former soccer players and celebrities, compete against each other. The event is broadcast by the commercial channel ITV and traditionally takes place at the iconic Old Trafford, home of Manchester United.
For Littler, born in Warrington - just 26 kilometers from Manchester - participation would be a dream come true. He is a big fan of "The Red Devils" and does not hide his club love.
“I would love to play in the Soccer Aid game, but it's just hard finding the time and hopefully not breaking my arm," he told EsportsInsider.com.
During the interview, "The Nuke" also speaks candidly about his interest in the world of online gaming and livestreaming. "Whenever me and Ginge have the time we like to play games together, whenever he's live, I'll always ask to join. And now there’s the BOV Boys, I hope to get on a video with them sometime."
Littler also sees himself in an alternative career. If I wasn't playing darts, I'd probably be a streamer."
To people who suddenly get a lot of followers on social media, he has another golden tip: “I’d say it's harder to come through the ranks on social media nowadays. But obviously if you are up and coming and you get a few followers, you're going to get the fame. Just ignore them all. Don't look at anything. Do your own thing. I'll have a look now and again, see what people are saying and just laugh at them.”
Sports-wise, Littler experienced a top month. In late July, he won the prestigious World Matchplay - the PDC's biggest tournament after the World Cup. Littler defeated compatriot James Wade 18-13 in the final at the iconic Winter Gardens, completing the "Triple Crown" (World Darts Championship, Premier League Darts and World Matchplay). But not everything comes easy to him.
So driving a car turns out to be a lot harder. Littler has now failed his theory test for the fifth time. He also openly shared that with his 1.9 million followers on Instagram. Just like after the fourth failed attempt, he posted a photo of the result in his Story.
"5th time and counting," he writes with self-mockery. The photo shows the official letter from the exam bureau, with the announcement at the top, "We regret to inform you that you have failed your car theory exam. Littler just made two mistakes too many in the multiple-choice section.
He will hope Manchester United won't make the same mistakes as he also mooted on what they need for the upcoming season. “I think (Alejandro) Garnacho is on his way out and if Villa want him, then I think we have to take Watkins off them. Or we should try and get (Emiliano) Martinez. So the three signings I think we need to make are Watkins, Douglas Luiz and Martinez.”
“Anything could happen with (Bryan) Mbuemo and (Matheus) Cunha over the line. I think we need a midfielder and I’d sign Douglas Luiz with Juventus letting him go. He can sit, he can go more attacking. But to be honest, I'm happy with (Manuel) Ugarte and (Kobbie) Mainoo sitting. Or maybe Bruno will sit now and we’ll play Cunha alongside the front two.”
